Project was approved in the Paulo Gustavo Law notice and debuts on the 12th

The historic churches of Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, in Cabedelo, Nossa Senhora da Guia, in the municipality of Lucena and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Batalha, in Cruz do Espírito Santo will be the stage for the “Temples of Faith and Music” project, approved in the notice of the Paulo Gustavo Law – Ministry of Culture, through the Paraíba Department of Culture.

The project is authored by cultural producer Ana Gondim and aims to unite architectural heritage with classical, armorial and popular music and also include heritage education. It will take place in the months of April and May with musical performances by Quinteto da Paraíba and Quinteto Uirapuru, as well as a conversation with the architect and urban planner Raglan Gondim.

The project brought together a renowned team. The identity art is by visual artist Flávio Tavares, executive produced by Valeska Asfora and technical produced by Killdare Araújo. The project will also produce three videos that will have texts and narration by award-winning writer Maria Valéria Rezende with images and production by the Geografia da Paraíba group, and which will be made available on the project’s YouTube channel.

Ana Gondim highlights that “the idea is to offer instrumental music to those who do not have easy access to chamber groups and combine this with a stimulus for the appreciation of our heritage, awakening the feeling of belonging and raising our self-esteem in Paraíba”. She recalled that she carried out a similar project when she was Secretary of Culture and Tourism of Bananeiras, with music performances in historic churches and chapels in the municipality and lectures on the preservation of monuments.

Executive producer Valeska Asfora highlights the importance of the Paulo Gustavo Law, which democratizes access to culture and the return of projects in Paraíba: “The notice makes this very important return possible, and in the case of the “Templos de Fé e Música” project, it will show the value of some of our churches as historical heritage and uniting culture with education”.

Writer Maria Valéria Resende highlighted that “few regions of Brazil have architectural heritage from their history that dates back to the first centuries of colonization. Paraíba is one of them, and its churches and chapels stand out. In this heritage and in the visual richness that it offers us, through painting and sculpture, there is hidden, however, another richness that is not immediately noticeable: its role as almost unique spaces in the social and artistic life of the colony. Temples were privileged spaces for social coexistence and the stage for artistic expressions throughout colonial history, especially music. Our project offers us the opportunity to enjoy this heritage far beyond stone and wood, experiencing, as our ancestors did, the harmony between visuals and music.”

The musical performances of “Templos de Fé e Música” will be preceded by a conversation about the monument where the project is taking place, based on the history and architectural peculiarities of the heritage and symbolic values of each church, with the architect and urban planner Raglan Gondim and the participation of teachers and students from the state and municipal education network. Teachers will be multipliers of information in the classroom. Musical performances and lectures will be open to the public and free of charge.

The premiere of this edition of the “Templos de Fé e Música” project takes place on April 12, in the municipality of Cabedelo, in the chapel of Fortaleza de Santa Catarina. At 4pm the Conversation Circle “Capela de Santa Catarina: architecture, meanings and belongings” takes place and, at 6pm, the concert is presented with the Quinteto da Paraíba, one of the most renowned chamber music groups in the country, whose purpose is to publicize the Brazilian and northeastern music.
