A new international airport will be built in the municipality of Santa Cruz Cabrália, in the extreme south of the state. The Costa do Descobrimento International Airport will have a runway measuring 3000m long and 45m wide, a passenger terminal measuring 300m² and will have an investment of R$1.5 billion.

According to the Bahia Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra), responsible for the work, the project aims to reduce the overload at Porto Seguro Airport, which cannot be expanded. The equipment received 2 million passengers in 2023 and is the only one in the region that receives international flights.

“The construction of a new airport in the region will contribute to the development of tourism and the national and international transport of cargo, such as fish and lobsters”, stated the agency.

The operation will be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with a term of up to 30 years. The expectation is that the works to implement the airport will last five years after the start of the concession. During the period, the company that wins the bid will be responsible for managing Porto Seguro Airport.

A bidding process began last Thursday (28th) to hire the company responsible for preparing the preliminary engineering project for the works. The opening of envelopes with proposals from interested parties will begin on May 16th. The auction for the implementation and The concession of the property should take place in October.
