Rio de Janeiro City Hall signed, last Monday (01/04), an unprecedented cooperation agreement with the OpenAI technological laboratory to supply the ChatGPT-4 generative artificial intelligence system for the city’s Knowledge Ships.
“We want to make Rio the ‘Capital of Innovation’. This is yet another initiative by the City Hall in this regard. Artificial intelligence technologies have the potential to produce profound changes in the world. Promoting digital inclusion and ensuring that the most vulnerable have access to these tools is essential for this world of the future to be more fair and equal”said Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The event took place at Nave do Knowledge in Nova Brasília, in Complexo do Alemão, North Zone of Rio, and was attended by the Municipal Secretary of Science and Technology, Tatiana Roque, and the head of International Policy and Partnerships at OpenAI, James Hairston .
”It is essential to ensure that students and visitors to the Naves have access to artificial intelligence. Many would not be able to use this tool, since it is paid. Free access promotes inclusion and equality. We want to train qualified professionals in different areas of the city of Rio, especially in the most vulnerable locations, so that they are capable of dealing with this essential technology to shape the future”said Tatiana.
GPT-4 – short for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 – is a multimodal language model created by OpenAI in 2023 and the 4th in the GPT series. It is capable of creating content for various purposes, such as articles and news; scripts for videos; texts for emails; financial projections; and codes in different programming languages. GPT-4 can interpret images and graphics, providing analysis and insights into the content inserted.
“Our mission is to ensure that generative artificial intelligence can benefit everyone, so we are very happy to launch this digital inclusion project in Rio de Janeiro”James emphasized.
During the agreement signing event, a presentation of the new technology was made to users of Nave do Complexo do Alemão.
Ships of Knowledge
The Knowledge Naves are innovation and digital inclusion centers managed by the City of Rio that offer free internet access, workshops, lectures, workshops and qualification courses in various areas focused on professions of the future.
The nine units are located in the North and West zones of the city and aim to enhance the digital experience, benefiting mainly residents of communities located in socially vulnerable territories.
Since December 2021, the Ships have had more than 500,000 user accesses across the nine units. The tool will also have free access on Satellites and Navezinhas in Rio de Janeiro.
