The conversations that resulted in the division of the State of Mato Grosso and the creation of Mato Grosso do Sul began, in fact, more than 100 years before October 11, 1977, the date that marks the founding of MS.
In a survey of documented facts from 1870 to 1991, journalist Sérgio Manoel da Cruz, 81 years old, launches a book on April 10th, highlighting the entire “History of the foundation of Mato Grosso do Sul”.
In the work, the historian and author of several books that rescue important parts of the history of MS, creates a timeline based on newspapers from the time and records how the idea of the division of Mato Grosso took shape until it left the paper.

The book begins in 1870, when, on May 30 of that year, Jornal do Commercio, from Rio de Janeiro, one of the most influential in the country at the time, defended the change of the Capital from Cuiabá to Corumbá.
Before Mato Grosso was finally divided, more than a century passed. But, just two years before the separation, the idea of distributing the Mato Grosso territory into 4 states was floated.
The details of division into 4
As documented in “History of the Foundation of Mato Grosso do Sul”, by Sérgio Cruz, on April 7, 1975, the divisive climate that began to dominate the political environment following the first signals from the Federal Government, stimulated the creativity of congressmen.
The first to invest in an innovative proposal was deputy Antônio Carlos de Oliveira, from MDB, with an electoral stronghold in the southern region of Mato Grosso, with the idea of dividing the territory into four states.
“Mr. Antônio Carlos de Oliveira is of the opinion that the heterogeneity of the region is one of the biggest reasons for dividing that huge State into four. The largest of them, in the extreme north, not yet named by the parliamentarian, would cut the current one in half. The other half to the south would be subdivided into Mato Grosso do Sul, at the southernmost tip; that of the Pantanal, occupying the entire vast area of large cattle ranching wetlands, in addition to the State of Mato Grosso do Norte, the Cuiabá area”, highlights the work.
The deputy’s idea, however, ended up being shelved even before the official divisive proposal materialized.

These and other relevant historical facts, up until the subsequent founding of Mato Grosso do Sul, are in the book “História da Fundação de Mato Grosso do Sul”, which will be launched by Sérgio Cruz on April 10, at the Legislative Assembly of MS in Campo Grande, from 8am to 11am, in the Guaicurus Palace Lobby.
