For the first time in history, the image of Our Lady of Penha will be taken to a State prison unit. Inmates devoted to the saint, patron saint of Espírito Santo, will be able to follow the pilgrimage of the image at the Cariacica Women’s Prison Center (CPFC) this Tuesday (02), at 9 am.
This is the 454th edition of the Festa da Penha. On this occasion, the image will travel through the galleries, the mother and child accommodation and the work workshops, with Marian songs and prayers.
The celebration is part of the spiritual assistance actions carried out in the State’s prison units. Currently, 2,712 religious volunteers work in all 37 prison units in the State. There are 27 denominations, divided into 154 groups.
The Religious Assistance Advisory (ASRE) of the Secretariat of Justice (Sejus) coordinates the work carried out in the State’s prison units, together with the Prison System Interconfessional Working Group (Ginter).
“It is the first time that the prison system hosts the pilgrimage of Our Lady of Penha. The activity begins the celebrations of the Festa da Penha, with the possibility for the faithful of the women’s prison to exercise their faith”, explains the coordinator of Religious Assistance (ASRE), Maria Jovelina Debona.
“In addition to being a right provided for in the Penal Execution Law (LEP), we seek to promote spirituality actions in prison units as a form of resocialization. Respect for different beliefs and cults is guaranteed for people deprived of liberty and, in this way, we are able to bring together different religious segments to meet the needs of the prison population who wish to express their faith, in accordance with their beliefs”, points out Maria Jovelina Debona.
About Ginter
Ginter is made up of theological advisors who voluntarily contribute to Sejus for religious assistance in the prison system. In addition to qualifying volunteers who work in prison units, the group also works to expand the spiritual assistance offered in prisons.
