Several attacks were recorded this Monday (1st) against the offices and residences of right-wing federal deputies and allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The person responsible for the acts of vandalism was the Popular Youth Uprising Movement, linked to the left. The date was chosen in reference to the 60th anniversary of the military regime (1964-1985) and to “protest” against the acts of January 8, 2024.

One of the attacks was against the office of federal deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), in Fortaleza. The parliamentarian said he will contact the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry in light of the facts recorded. The acts of vandalism – many of them against parliamentarians – were repudiated by politicians from different parties in the Chamber of Deputies.

In the images in Fortaleza, young people with their faces covered appear spray-painting walls, burning dolls with the face of André Fernandes.

In this and other acts, they also held posters with the faces of those accused in 8/1 and reproductions of the Federal Constitution with red paint stains “resembling blood”. And on some parliamentarians’ homes, they wrote graffiti: “here lives a coup plotter: for truth, memory and justice”.

The Popular Youth Uprising Movement said it carried out acts of vandalism in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Ceará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Roraima, Amapá, Mato Grosso and also in the Federal District. The speech is that they supposedly want to “denounce the coup attempt in 2023 and explain its relationship with the 1964 Military Coup”.

In Levante’s words, “simultaneous denunciation actions were carried out against politicians and personalities linked to the “extreme right” who organized, mobilized and/or were present in the coup attempt on January 8, 2023, in Brasília”. According to the movement, “all of the reported targets had a direct connection with the preparation of the ministerial draft that attempted to allow federal intervention, or played an active role in mobilizing and disseminating the agenda on social media.”

And the movement’s spokespeople still say they will push for investigations and prevent there from being “amnesty for those involved.” “We are once again at the door of those who attack democracy, attack our right to have a voice, attack fundamental human rights. Youth know how expensive our right to voice and to make decisions is. We did not and will not watch in silence the attempt to sell our country”, stated Daiane Araújo, from the National Coordination of the Popular Youth Uprising.

The Popular Youth Uprising is a movement organized by young people from left-wing parties that claims to discuss social issues, says it seeks to “transform the reality around it”, but, in reality, uses acts of vandalism to target political opponents.

The movement became nationalized in 2012, after promoting protest actions against military personnel and supporters of the 1964 military regime, when the installation of the Memory, Truth and Justice Commission was being discussed.

According to information on the movement’s website, some of the targets of this Monday’s attacks (1st) were:

  • Eduardo Bolsonaro – in São Paulo/SP – Congressman
  • Marcelo Álvaro Antônio (PL) – in Belo Horizonte/MG – Congressman
  • Pedro Lupion (PP) – in Curitiba/PR – Congressman
  • Anderson Torres (PL) – in Brasília/DF – former Bolsonaro Minister of Justice and former DF Secretary of Security
  • André Fernandes (PL) – in Fortaleza/CE – Congressman
  • Clarissa Tércio (PP) – in Recife/PE – federal deputy
  • Nicoletti (Union) – in Boa Vista/RR – Congressman
  • Silvia Waiãpi (PL) – in Macapá/AP – federal deputy
  • Antonio Galvan – in Cuiabá/MT – coordinator of the Green and Yellow Movement

The report asked the Federal Police whether the acts of vandalism by the left-wing movement would be investigated, but received no response until the article was published.

Targets and repudiation

After being the target of the movement and even having a doll with his face burned, federal deputy André Fernandes (PL-CE), pre-candidate for mayor of Fortaleza, informed that he will call the Federal Police and the Public Ministry to investigate the case and punish those involved.

“From the security camera videos and images posted on social media, we can already see that these are movements linked to the PT,” the parliamentarian wrote on social media. The statement was made because those responsible for the act were covering their faces and wearing shirts from the Popular Uprising and also from the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST).

Federal deputy Silvia Waiãpi, one of the targets of the movement, used social media to repudiate the attacks suffered. “An action inciting hatred and criminal attacks! These were acts of vandalism that violate democratic rights and freedom of expression. Let the investigations identify those involved and those who ordered them, as well as who finances these acts”, wrote the parliamentarian.

When taking a stance on the attacks made by the movement, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) said he was “flattered” by the memory of the Levante that “supports and even has a little dance for Maduro”.

“At least they weren’t violent like what happened with the Dep. @andrefernm in Ceará, whose office was graffitied and a doll in his likeness set on fire. Of course, this will not be reported as anti-democratic or hateful, at most a cute word like “escracho””, wrote the deputy.

Eduardo Bolsonaro also explained that, “it seems, the act did not take place in front” of his office. “It was difficult to say for sure, as the photo is very closed, in fact, a practice used by Lula to hide the fact that his” popular “acts are empty”, he said.

The attacks were repudiated by other parliamentarians from different parties in the Chamber of Deputies. “It is absolutely unacceptable for protesters to resort to violence to express political disagreements,” said deputy Coronel Telhada (PP-SP).

Deputy Rodolfo Nogueira (PL-MS) emphasized the need to respect democratic institutions and repudiate any form of political violence.

“Political violence is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. We must vehemently repudiate any form of political violence and ensure that all parliamentarians can exercise their mandates freely, without threats or intimidation,” he said.
