The Public Ministry of Rio (MPRJ) denounced eight people for physical and verbal attacks against MST deputy Marina (PT-RJ) during an event in Nova Friburgo held in August 2023. During an event held with the population of Lumiar, a district of the city Serrana, the parliamentarian was the target of verbal abuse, pushing and attacks with bottles, stones and eggs.
In total, Jailton Barroso Eller, for publicly inciting the commission of a crime, Wanderlêi Araujo, Leandro Nascimento Longo, Manoel João Leal, Marcos Halley da Silva Klein, Aderlã de Oliveira Frez, Maria Conceição Costa and Samara Thuller de Oliveira, for insulting real and illegal constraint. At the time of the attacks, Marina from the MST said they were supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
According to the complaint, Jailton had summoned people to prevent the meeting with the deputy the day before the event, using a messaging application. On the day of the incident, August 12, the other seven accused appeared at the scene, where they swore and attacked the deputy.
“It should be noted that the crime of real insult to the detriment of Lucia Marina was committed against a public servant, due to her duties, as well as in the presence of several people”, says an excerpt from the MPRJ complaint.
The Nova Friburgo Criminal Investigation Prosecutor’s Office also proposed criminal transition for three other people identified as participants in the acts, for committing crimes of lesser offensive potential in the same context. They must pay a fine of one minimum wage, in addition to being prohibited from leaving the district in which they live for more than 20 days without prior authorization from the judge.
At the time of the incident, the Landless Workers Movement (MST) published a note in solidarity with the deputy and asking for those involved to be held accountable.
