Former deputy Almerinda Filgueiras is arrested in Rio for corruption


Nova Iguaçu/RJ – On the morning of this Monday, 1/4, the Federal Police arrested the former federal deputy of Rio de Janeiro Almeirnda Filgueiras, who was on the run from justice. The arrest was made in the city of São João de Meriti/RJ, in Baixada Fluminense.

The prisoner, 72 years old and born in Rio de Janeiro, holds the position of municipal secretary of Social Assistance, Human Rights and Racial Equality at São João de Meriti City Hall. She was convicted of the crimes of passive corruption and money laundering.

The arrest is the result of investigations that date back to 2006, when the Federal Police launched Operation Leech (Ambulance Mafia) to dismantle a criminal group made up of parliamentarians and businessmen, which rigged bids for the acquisition of ambulances in city halls of, least 20 Brazilian states.

Federal police located the former deputy at the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance, Human Rights and Racial Equality of São João de Meriti, where the preventive arrest warrant resulting from a sentencing decision, issued by the 7th Court of the Federal Justice Section in Mato Grosso on March 25, 2024.

After formalization of the arrest, the woman was taken to the Federal Police Station in Nova Iguaçu for the usual procedures, from where she will be sent to the Legal Medical Institute for a corpus delicti examination, and later to the state prison system, where it will remain at the disposal of the Court. She must serve a nine-year prison sentence for the crimes committed.
