Rio – A 9-year-old boy was bitten on the leg by a pitbull dog, which was loose in Bangu, in the West Zone of Rio, this Friday (29). The child was rescued and taken to the Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital, in Realengo, also in the West Zone, where he received more than 20 stitches to close the wound.

The case took place on Rua Nova Prata, in the region known as Catiri. To the DAY, Sarah Nascimento da Silva, the boy’s mother, said that her son usually plays football in the street with friends. According to her, the dog had been abandoned for more than two months and left the children scared because he ran after the ball.

“He was attacked by a stray dog and the owner didn’t show up. We don’t know who he is. He’s been here on the street for about two months, almost three, and the children always said that he was lying there and that They were scared because he was running after the ball. Yesterday this fatality happened to my son,” he said.

The child was rescued at an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in the region and was later transferred to Albert Schweitzer Hospital. According to the Municipal Health Department (SMS), the victim was discharged this Saturday (30). According to Sarah, her son received more than 20 stitches in his leg, but is doing well.

“He is at home and as well as possible. He is taking the medications prescribed by the doctor and has more than 20 stitches in his leg,” he explained.

The case was registered this Saturday (30) at the 34th DP (Bangu). The police asked the boy to undergo a criminal examination. When asked about the matter, the Civil Police reported that the investigation is ongoing to locate the animal’s owner and clarify all the facts.

Rescued dog

Outraged by the attack on the boy, residents of the street where the incident took place allegedly threatened to kill the animal. Councilor Luiz Ramos Filho, president of the Animal Defense Committee of the Rio City Council, rescued the dog and took it to the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ), in Santa Cruz, still in the West Zone.

“We managed to rescue the dog, which was taken to the Zoonosis Control Center. People need to understand that the animal is irrational. It’s the fault of whoever irresponsibly abandoned it on the street. That person must be held responsible and answer for having put his life of these children at risk”, said the councilor.

The parliamentarian highlighted that the dog will be vaccinated, dewormed, neutered and microchipped. Afterwards, he will be put up for adoption. Luiz Ramos Filho highlighted that he will contact the Environmental Protection Department (DPMA) about the case.
