Sara Borges She developed speech at the age of 10 due to level 2 autism — on a scale from 1 to 3. Currently, at age 37, she uses her voice to teach public school students in the Federal District.

“When I was a child it was difficult to communicate with people, to say what I felt. I suffered a lot of bullying at school and I had no empathy. I thought ‘when I grow up, I want to be a teacher because I want to change this reality'”, he says Sara.

This is Sara’s first job, as she was approved for the Department of Education’s teacher competition. In addition to the programmed content, she takes advantage of her influence within the classroom to teach about tolerance, diversity and respect for differences.

“Most of what we do in the classroom, we do with a lot of games. Unlike all the teachers, she pays more attention to us, makes classes more fun”, says Marina Sofia, aged 9.

“She’s a lot of fun. She does a lot of experiments and some really fun classes”, agrees Isaac Alves, also 9 years old.

The coordinator of Escola Classe da Asa Sul, in the center of Brasília, Jeane Lima, says that Sara’s teachings go beyond the classroom.

“For us to be able to see where Sara has come is an example for us, for the parents at the school and for the teachers. Sara is incredible. She can control the class, access the hearts of the children. This, in a classroom class, it’s super important”, says Jeane.

Sara is not alone on this diversity journey. According to the Department of Education, in the public network there are more than 30 thousand students with disabilities. Of this total, almost 9 thousand with autism spectrum disorder.
