Starting from the milestone of 60 years of military intervention in Brazil, which began on March 31, 1964, the podcast ‘A Ditadura Recontada’ arrives on Globoplay and audio platforms this Thursday, the 28th.

Presented by journalist Nadedja Calado and co-narrated by researcher Helena Dias, the Original Globoplay podcast, produced by CBN, is inspired by the five volumes from the ‘Dictadura Collection’ and in collection of almost 300 hours of recordings historical stories by Elio Gaspari, with unpublished audios that narrate the main events and behind the scenes of the period.

Conceived and conceived by Pedro Dias Leite, director of journalism at CBN, and journalist Plínio Fraga, the audio documentary has six episodes published weekly. The head of production and recording fell to Thiago Barbosa, digital products manager at CBN.

“Gaspari’s work took 40 years to be completed. It is a deep dive into documents, photos, tickets, notes, minutes from those who lived at that time, as well as personal and intimate accounts such as the audios of former president Geisel”, says Helena . “We tried to have each episode narrate and contextualize historical moments, without forgoing Elio’s critical eye. Sometimes surprising, at other times relaxed, but above all revealing of characters and situations that occurred during the long night of the Brazilian dictatorship”, adds Plínio.

Crucial points

The first episode contextualizes the climate experienced in the country in the years leading up to the coup, with party radicalism and the effects that led to the outbreak of the movement, with special emphasis on audios that recall behind-the-scenes assessments and the ambitions of the main leaders.

“The podcast brings fundamental facts for understanding the dictatorship and recounts crucial points of those dark years – from the coup to AI-5, from torture and extermination to the opening that brought Brazil back to democracy”, says Thiago Barbosa, general coordinator of production.

The work also portrays the divisions between the military since the beginning of the coup, the anarchy in the barracks and basements, in addition to the discoveries that led to the rise and fall of the dictatorship.

“The listener will have access to the details of stories that, to some extent, we already know, such as the coup itself, the death of Vladimir Herzog, the Araguaia Guerrilla and the reopening. However, they will learn new facts, which help to explain what it was like at the time, and most importantly, they will enter into the intimacy of the military and the true dimension of what happened and their responsibilities”, explains presenter Nadedja Calado.

“One of the treasures of the audio series is a conversation between Ernesto Geisel and his future Army minister, Dale Coutinho, from 50 years ago, in which they speak openly about everything: the execution of guerrillas and opponents of the dictatorship already captured and surrendered, and how they thought that was exactly what had to be done, the importance of AI-5 in order not to lose control of the regime”, highlights Pedro Dias Leite, director of journalism at CBN.

“A Ditadura Recontada” is available free of charge on Globoplay and audio platforms. To listen to the first episode, click here.
