Five municipalities in the region affected by the collapse of the Vale dams, in Brumadinho, will receive 216 new popular homes (Fortuna de Minas, Morada Nova de Minas, Papagaios, Maravilhas and Pequi), and four other cities will have socioeconomic projects developed in the areas of infrastructure (Morada Nova de Minas, São Joaquim de Bicas and Três Marias) and health (Florestal).

The actions will be made possible with another transfer made by the Government of Minas Gerais, Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG), Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and Public Defender’s Office of Minas Gerais (DPMG). This time, R$160 million was transferred so that the city halls – responsible for execution – could build the houses and develop other socioeconomic projects (details of each project can be found at the end of the article).

The construction of popular houses in the Paraopeba River basin is a socioeconomic initiative defined in the Popular Consultation and made possible with resources provided for in the Reparation Agreement. Brumadinho was the first municipality to receive the amounts allocated for the construction of 260 houses, with R$113 million transferred in August 2023.

With this new amount, city halls have already received a total of approximately R$1.6 billion since last year. The amounts were allocated to 24 affected municipalities for the execution of 52 socioeconomic projects. Brumadinho City Hall was the one that received the most resources for the execution of five projects: R$467 million allocated.

The Judicial Agreement establishes a series of measures to be complied with due to the damage resulting from the collapse of the Vale SA dams, which took 272 lives and generated a series of social, environmental and economic impacts in the Paraopeba River basin and throughout the state of Minas General.
