Pernambuco accounts for 12,623 probable cases of dengue. Of the total, 827 have already been confirmed. The others are being investigated by the State Department of Health (SES-PE), which notified ten serious cases until now.

The data is from the most recent Epidemiological Report on Arbovirusesreleased this Wednesday (27), which contains numbers for epidemiological weeks 1 to 12, which correspond to the period from December 31, 2023 to March 23 of this year.

The incidence is 139.3 probable cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. According to the document, the number of probable dengue cases is 522.7% higher when compared to the same period of the previous year, when 2,027 cases were reported.

According to SES-PE, to date, five suspicious deaths have been analyzed and discarded. Another 18 deaths were reported due to arboviruses and remain under investigation.

The survey shows that the highest incidence of probable dengue cases was reported in women aged 20 to 29 years.

Chikungunya and Zika
The Arbovirus Epidemiological Report also lists 2,395 probable cases of Chikungunya, 163 of which have already been confirmed. The incidence is 26.4 per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Furthermore, the document also points out that Pernambuco is investigating 247 probable cases of Zika, 46 of which are in pregnant women. None of them have been confirmed so far.

Follow-up
This Wednesday (27), SES-PE held an alignment meeting with directors of regional hospitals in the State and Emergency Care Units (UPAs) regarding notifications of cases of arboviruses.

The objective was to intensify the monitoring of data provided by the urgency and emergency network. On the occasion, the SES-PE technical staff highlighted the need for units to keep notifications of confirmed and suspected cases of dengue, chikungunya and zika updated.

“Our idea was to guide and promote awareness among all those present who are part of the network about the recording of data in the system and the collection of blood from the patient so that they can also be carried out in a timely manner. All of this contributes to the quality of the final information and so that we can also make public health decisions in the most strategic and timely way”, explained executive secretary of Health Surveillance and Primary Care, Verônica Cisneiros.

During the meeting with health managers, the most recent figures from the Arbovirus Epidemiological Bulletin were also presented, including details of incidence by sex and age and the spatial distribution of cases reported over the last few months.

On the occasion, the initiatives that the department has been carrying out to enhance the fight against arboviruses in Pernambuco were also reported, from the launch of the Combat Plan, carried out in November 2023, to the recent training in clinical management of cases with professionals from Regional Health Departments (Geres) and more than 120 municipalities.

“Hospitals and UPAs, in addition to providing care to the population, are our first major thermometer in relation to arboviruses. This is where we identify the worsening of cases and the relationship with other diseases. Their participation was essential, as they were able to bring their demands and realities. It was a very good exchange”, said the director of Environmental Surveillance and Occupational Health, Eduardo Bezerra.
