Environmental Awareness in MS Schools: Planting Seedlings and Care of the Electricity Network

The school as a point for disseminating good practices, reflections and systemic learning. For some time now, students from state schools in Mato Grosso do Sul have been faced with actions involving current issues that reinforce citizenship on the most different fronts. One of them is environmental awareness.

To reinforce this concern, SED (Secretary of Education) and Sejusp (Secretary of Justice and Public Security), through the Safe School program, implemented in partnership with Energisa MS the Environmental Education in Schools project at REE (State Education Network) . The action kicked off on Tuesday (26).

The activity consists of planting tree seedlings of native vegetation species within the school itself to be cared for by the students – the initiative meets one of the main pillars of Governor Eduardo Riedel’s management: an inclusive, prosperous, green Mato Grosso do Sul and digital.

The students will plant the seedlings and monitor the growth of the species with quarterly reports that will be monitored by Energisa’s Environmental Management area. Combined with practice, the objective is to also provide environmental awareness lectures.

One of the lectures will deal with the relationship between afforestation and the electricity grid. If, on the one hand, urban afforestation brings numerous benefits, such as improving air quality, reducing noise pollution, shading and beautifying urban areas, on the other hand, poorly maintained trees or trees planted in inappropriate locations can pose risks to the electricity grid.

“We will explain from which species are recommended to be planted under the electricity grid, to the risks that unsuitable species can cause, such as short circuits and even more serious accidents”, says Energisa MS environmental engineer, Giovana Marques.

She also highlights that the lecture will address the importance of carrying out preventive pruning in order to avoid interruptions in the electricity supply. “We will also highlight the care taken by students and the community with the electricity grid when flying kites, climbing trees and what to pay attention to on rainy days”, she concludes.

“This project seeks to encourage students to understand, value and preserve the environment, in the search for sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, which are inherent, including, to the electricity sector”, explains the Strategic and Quality Management supervisor at Energisa MS , Fabiana Monfilier.
