An event in reference to Air Max Day, a celebration of Nike’s classic sneaker, caused turmoil and left people injured in São Paulo on Tuesday night (26). At least six people were trampled.
The Guadalupe store, in partnership with the Survival brand, attracted a crowd to the Paraíso neighborhood (south zone) with the promise of free distribution of Nike products such as the Air Max DN sneakers.
The event took place in the store area, on Av. Bernardino de Campos, and was published on social media. In the publications, the organizers said that there would be no queue and that the products would not be delivered on a first-come, first-served basis, that everything would depend on luck.
The Guadalupe store was contacted by phone and messages on social media and WhatsApp, and responded that Nike’s consultancy should be sought. Survival was also questioned via social media, but did not respond.
In a statement, Nike stated that the event’s engagement exceeded initial expectations.
“However, it is with regret that we report that during the event, some people required medical attention. It is important to highlight that, fortunately, none of the cases were more serious,” he stated.
“The organization is in contact with the respective families of those affected to provide assistance. Our priority is to support people who required medical attention to make a full recovery,” Nike highlighted.
According to the Military Police, the disturbance happened around 7:30 pm. The six injured were taken by Samu (Mobile Emergency Care Service) to different health units.
The Fire Department confirmed that it was called, but said that only the PM could provide information about the incident.
The Municipal Health Department was contacted, but did not respond to questions about how many people were treated by Samu, their health status or where they were sent.
The SSP (Public Security Secretariat) stated that it has not found any record of the incident so far.
