The Government of Mato Grosso launched, this Tuesday (26.03), the D-Day campaign – Education is the Path that Sets You Free, held at the Central State Penitentiary, in the Distrito Industrial neighborhood, in Cuiabá. The ceremony took place simultaneously at the Socio-Educational Service Centers of Mato Grosso.

The action is a partnership between the Government of Mato Grosso, the Court of Justice, the State Public Prosecutor’s Office, the State Public Defender’s Office and the Brazilian Bar Association – Mato Grosso section, with the aim of increasing the number of re-educated students enrolled in Youth and Adult Education ( EJA), in Elementary School I and II classes, in prisons, public jails and resocialization centers.

The Secretary of State for Education, Alan Porto, assured that the partnership provides the opportunity for those re-educated to continue their educational training even when they are deprived of their liberty. In the end, in addition to receiving certificates of completion of education, they will have reduced part of their sentences, as regulated by current legislation.

Classes take place in rooms attached to penitentiaries and resocialization centers, in 36 of the 40 units of the prison system. In this academic year of 2024, there are already more than 2,800 students enrolled and the goal is to exceed 3,000 enrollments in the coming days.

“Our objective is to work so that the re-educated person has more opportunities when they reintegrate into society and the way to achieve this is through education. The State Government has been investing in teaching materials, teacher training and the infrastructure of these classrooms”, highlighted the Secretary of Education.

Judge Orlando Perri, who leads the Prison and Socio-Educational System Monitoring and Inspection Group (GMF/MT), thanked the partnership with Seduc, highlighting that education contributes to the construction of a better society.

“The State Government is giving more dignity to the socio-educational system, increasing classrooms for re-educating students. I’m in favor of the detainee having a chance when he leaves here. However, without qualification, the chances will be lower. So, our goal is to train all of them and give them a job opportunity abroad”, added Perri.

“Our objective is to work so that the re-educated person has more opportunities when they reintegrate into society”, said Alan Porto

Through a partnership signed with the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso (IFMT), Seduc will offer the initial and continuing training course for real estate painters, lasting 200 hours. The training will be aimed at re-educating students at the Central State Penitentiary and the Ana Maria do Couto Women’s Prison, with five classes of 30 people in each of them.

The Secretary of State for Public Security, Colonel César Roveri, stated that the partnership between the institutions and Seduc reinforces the Mato Grosso Government’s commitment to the education of re-educated students.

“This sum of efforts is an important partnership so that these re-educated students have the opportunity to return to the social world with an education, a quality, so that they can be inserted into the job market. This is also a determination of Governor Mauro Mendes, who pays special attention to the penitentiary system, which has one of the most modern units in the country in Mato Grosso”, he highlighted.

The State’s public defender, Luziane Castro, who also participated in the launch of the campaign, highlighted the Ombudsman’s partnership and stated that the institution will seek to encourage re-educating students and “make them understand the importance of education being an effective path to transformation”.

Investment in education

In February this year, Seduc delivered 107 65-inch Smart TVs to equip classrooms in prison units. According to the Secretary of Education, Alan Porto, the use of Smart TVs, associated with books from the Structured Education System, will significantly improve the teaching and learning process.

The socio-educational service centers also maintain partnerships with other institutions to offer education in prison units. Currently, there are 108 face-to-face classrooms, with 532 students re-educating between regular education, vocational courses and higher education.
