O Rio BRT recorded an increase in its daily use in recent years, with numbers jumping from 150 thousand to 375 thousand passengers in 2021, since the city hall took over management of the modal. This growth, although impressive, still falls short of the peak recorded during the 2016 Olympics, when the service served 700,000 users daily.

According to the Municipal Transport Secretariat, the goal is to reach the mark of 450 thousand passengers by 2026, considering the three main corridors: Transcarioca, Transoeste It is Transolímpica. Since the management transition in 2021, a series of redevelopment and improvement measures have been implemented, including the renovation and reopening of 46 previously closed stations.

Furthermore, the city hall replaced the blue buses with “yellow”, increasing the fleet from 120 to 515 articulated vehicles. In Transoeste, for example, the last corridor to receive the new Euro 6 buses, with less polluting technology, there was a reduction of up to 72% in intervals during peak hours, according to municipal authorities.

The planning also includes improvements to the station infrastructure. Three Transoeste stations are undergoing interventions, with the installation of bicycle racks and adaptations for vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The station Magarça is scheduled to be the first to be delivered, with a module connected to the existing one and a bus and van feeder terminal.

In the region of Malto Alto, two viaducts are in the final stages of construction for the passage of articulated vehicles, in addition to the completion of a walkway for users. The terminal False Corralin Holy Crossis also under development, with a new temporary station already in operation until the project is completed.

One of the recent milestones was the revitalization of 31 kilometers of the BRT Transoeste pipeline, where the asphalt pavement was replaced by concrete. This project, completed in December 2023, represented a significant investment of more than R$221 million, demonstrating the municipal management’s commitment to improving the infrastructure and efficiency of the city’s public transport system.
