The storm that hit Rio Grande do Sul last Thursday (21) is still causing damage to the population. Eleven thousand customers of the State Electric Energy Company (CEEE) Equatorial remain without electricity in the statea number that, according to the concessionaire, represents 1% of the total.

Part of this 1% is the self-employed confectioner Vânia Braga, from Pelotas, in the south of RS, who will not be able to provide for the family. She works selling chocolates and Easter would be the ideal occasion to earn money. The time of year when she normally celebrates, now she regrets it.

“I can’t do it. I had to undo all the orders. It was my livelihood. I couldn’t do it because of Equatorial. I’ve been calling since Thursday (21st) in the early hours of the morning and they haven’t come”, he says.

Vânia lives on Estrada Costa, in the Charqueadas region. Near the house where she lives, the retired couple Laziro Machado and Ilvandina Silveira live. Dona Diná, as she is known, is diabetic and, without light, cannot store the insulin injections you need to receive daily.

“I had to store it with an acquaintance who has electricity and lives six blocks away. My husband has to go get it and then take it back. It’s difficult,” she says.

The problem they face is not one-off, but recurring. In 2023, Laziro says he spent 15 days without electricity.
