Mato Grosso becomes part of the group of states recognized as free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination following the publication of a decree from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in the Official Gazette of the Union this Monday (25). According to the document, vaccination of herds against the disease in these locations will be suspended from May 2nd.

The Mato Grosso breeders’ association has been part of the national surveillance plan against foot-and-mouth disease since its creation in 2017. In addition to the largest cattle herd in the country, the state also has one of the best genetics and the trade in pure breeders and breeders of origin or with special inspection and production certificate.

The measure also prohibits the storage, sale and use of foot-and-mouth disease vaccines in these states, in addition to limiting the movement of animals and products from these locations to states where vaccination is still mandatory.

The Federal Government also officially recognized 15 other states in addition to the Federal District (DF) as free from foot-and-mouth disease. See full list below:

Until May, new animals can be purchased only from areas free from foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination for slaughter or export. In both cases, the animals must enter through locations authorized by the Official Veterinary Service (SVO) and comply with specific measures such as transportation in sealed vehicles and direct transportation to a slaughter or pre-shipment establishment that has been inspected by official bodies.
