‘X-Men 97‘ featured one of the most moving episodes of the season, when Gambit sacrifices himself to save the people of Genosha from the genocidal attack of a gigantic Sentinel.

However, he could still return in new episodes or future seasons.
The information was revealed by the voice actor Chris Potter during his participation in the Fan Expo Calgary (via CBR).
In the original animation, Potter voiced Gambit, but was cast as Cable in ‘X-Men 97’.
While explaining this to the audience, he let slip Gambit’s possible return.
“When they called me, they told me I would play a new character. I said, ‘What do you mean? I’m Gambit.’ But they said, ‘No more, we’re going to kill you in episode 3. Now you’re going to be Cable.’ It turns out that Cable is the only one who can bring Gambit back.”
For those who don’t know, Gambit becomes the personification of Death, one of the four Horsemen of Apocalypse, in an arc from the comics, which could very well be adapted into new seasons of the animation.
Speaking of which, the 2nd season is in development, and it looks like the 3rd is also being planned, as the producer stated Brad Winderbaum.

In an interview with the comic booksthe filmmaker celebrated the popularity that the animation is having among fans and commented on the development of future episodes.
“We already have a 2nd season on the way and we are working on long-term planning. We were waiting to find out how our work would be received, but due to the popularity the series found so quickly, Season 3 is now in active development.”
It is worth remembering that the 1st season will only have eight episodes, and there is still no release date for the 2nd.
