Queen Elizabeth’s nostalgic message to Brazil the day before she died

-

The day before she died, Queen Elizabeth II, of the United Kingdom, recalled in a nostalgic tone her only visit to Brazil, in 1968, in a text published on Wednesday, 7th, on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Independence Day. This Thursday, a few hours later, Buckingham Palace announced that the monarch died “peacefully” at the age of 96, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

At the age of 96 and isolated due to problems related to mobility, the monarch visited the country only once, during the military dictatorship, when she was 42 years old, 16 of them reigning. On the occasion, she was introduced to the player Pelé, two-time world champion and on the eve of winning his third championship in Mexico, in 1970.

During the intense tour itinerary through Brazilian lands, which lasted 11 days, the monarch passed through Recife, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Campinas, Brasília and Salvador.

“Amidst the celebration of the important occasion of the 200 years of independence, I would like to congratulate Your Excellency and send my congratulations to the people of the Federative Republic of Brazil, remembering with affection my visit to the country in 1968. May we continue to work with hope and determination to overcome global challenges together”, reads the message sent by the queen.
