A healthy lifestyle is essential for taking care of the brain, which plays vital roles in processing information and controlling body functions. Alejandro Andersson, neurologist, highlights the importance of daily choices that protect this fundamental organ, emphasizing the need to eliminate harmful habits and cultivate hobbies and personal interests.

The brain, which consumes a large portion of the body’s oxygen and blood flow, is affected by our daily habits and can deteriorate if not properly cared for. Gabriel Lapman, cardiologist, warns that even pleasurable practices can become harmful, highlighting the importance of understanding and eradicating harmful habits to promote quality of life and prevent diseases that compromise cognitive function.

5 bad habits for your brain:

  • Being sedentary: Lack of regular physical activity can affect brain function and increase the risk of memory disorders and dementia, according to a study highlighted by Harvard Health Publishing. Exercising three to five times a week significantly reduces this risk.
  • Eating a lot of sugar: Excessive consumption of foods and drinks rich in sugar can lead to dependence and trigger chronic diseases such as diabetes. Although they initially provide a feeling of well-being, excess sugar can lead to physical and mental health problems, experts warn.
  • Eating ultra-processed foods: A diet rich in saturated fats and ultra-processed foods can clog arteries and cause physical and mental discomfort. Choosing nutritious foods such as nuts, berries, fish and vegetables can contribute to better overall health.
  • Resting badly: Insufficient sleep can impair the body’s metabolic cleansing, according to researchers at the Mayo Clinic. Sleeping at least seven hours a day is essential for restful sleep, helping to eliminate harmful substances accumulated during the day and promoting mental and physical health.
  • Smoke: Smoking reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis and compromising cognitive function. Furthermore, smoking is associated with a range of health problems, including lack of energy and difficulties with learning and understanding.
