The wait to receive doses of the dengue vaccine in Rio Grande do Sul is about to end. On Thursday afternoon, the State Department of Health (SES) announced the expected delivery of doses of the vaccine by the Ministry of Health. However, there is still no defined date for the arrival of the doses, according to the folder. Next Monday, technicians from the State Health Surveillance Center (Cevs) will meet with a team from the ministry’s National Immunization Program to define this and other information about the arrival of doses of the Qdenga vaccine.

According to a technical note published by the Ministry of Health, RS will receive 126,100 doses of the vaccine, for the cities of Porto Alegre, which will receive 72,898, Viamão, with 14,982, Alvorada, with 12,985, Gravataí, which will receive 16,425 doses, Cachoeirinha, 8,379 and Glorinha, with 463 doses. This is the fourth shipment of the vaccine, which will expand vaccination coverage to 625 new Brazilian municipalities, six of which are in RS.

Nonetheless, The cities with the highest number of confirmed cases of the disease in RS are not on the list. Santa Rosa with 10,298 cases, São Leopoldo with 8,294, Novo Hamburgo with 7,503, Tenente Portela with 3,758 and Três Passos with 3,555 confirmations are the five cities with the most cases of the disease in 2024.

According to the SES monitoring panel for dengue cases in 2024, of the municipalities that will receive the doses, the capital has the highest number of cases, with 995 as of this Thursday afternoon. Porto Alegre City Hall reports a higher number, with 2,227 cases until the last update, carried out on April 22nd.

In a note, SES concluded by stating that the choice was determined by three main criteria: the ranking of health regions and municipalities, the required quantity of doses according to availability (predicted by the manufacturer) and the calculation of the total doses to be delivered in a single shipment.

The vaccines required for the second dose will be sent later, considering the recommended interval of three months to complete the vaccination schedule. The target audience for the campaign in 2024 is children and teenagers aged 10 to 14. But on the 17th, the Ministry of Health recommended the expansion to young people aged 6 to 16.

RS with 102 deaths

On Wednesday, the SES confirmed five more deaths due to the disease, bringing the number of deaths in 2024 to 107. According to the SES monitoring panel of dengue cases in 2024, the RS has 85,348 confirmed cases of the disease, of which 72,072 are indigenouswhich is when contagion occurred within the State.
