From January to April this year, the Government of Amazonas has already held more than 80 meetings with various sectors, including industries, private companies, municipal, state and federal bodies, to provide information and coordinate prevention actions to face a possible severe drought in 2024. The meetings were determined by Governor Wilson Lima, who this Monday (06/05), met with Secretaries of State to previously align strategies that could reduce the impact of the drought in 2024.

According to the executive secretary of Civil Defense of Amazonas, Colonel Francisco Máximo, the government held meetings with the Regional Electoral Court, Energy and Sanitation and Water concessionaires, transport and logistics companies, mayors and municipal secretariats, the Public Ministry of Accounts and telecommunications companies. The aim is to ensure that services are not interrupted.

“Governor Wilson Lima has determined that we carry out, well in advance, all the necessary planning to ensure that the state is prepared for the drought. Within these preparatory actions, we have already held meetings with 88 institutions at federal, state, municipal level and public and private entities”, said the Secretary of Civil Defense.

Fighting fire outbreaks

Another concern is fighting fires that could increase during the dry period, taking into account weather conditions and the El Niño phenomenon, which intensified the 2023 drought, facilitating the spread of fire.

According to the Secretary of State for the Environment (Sema), Eduardo Taveira, some strategies are already being anticipated through projects with the German government. The work must occur in an integrated manner with other state bodies.

“These are resources that are already being used to set up a prevention structure in priority municipalities. The idea is that we can work integrated with Ipaam and the Fire Department. These resources are being made available to structure these points of attention during this period, including already providing for the training of brigades that will take place in nine municipalities that have the biggest fires”, stated the secretary.

Electricity supply

In February this year, the government presented a summary of the drought prognosis for the year 2024, to bodies, local authorities and representatives of companies supplying electricity in the state. The report presents data and information on weather forecasts, river levels and possible impacts.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the State Secretariat for Energy, Mining and Gas – Semig, National Electric Energy Agency – Aneel, National Petroleum Agency, Amazonas Gas Company – Cigás, Amazonas Energia, Oliveira Energia, Aggreko, Atem, Ream among others.
