In tune with the contemporary needs of Brazil and the world, federal deputy Lula da Fonte (PP) filed, this Monday (1st), bill 1059/2024, which includes animal welfare as a mandatory subject in the basic education network in public and private schools across the country.

This inclusion is an advance in the formation of a collective awareness of respect for life and public health and broadens the educational horizon of students, strengthening community ties, social responsibility and environmental sustainability”, highlighted Lula da Fonte.

Early childhood, secondary and primary school students will be aware of responsible animal ownership and hygiene, prevention of zoonoses and knowledge of protective legislation from an early age.

The project modernizes the Law of Guidelines and Bases (9,394), created 28 years ago, on December 20, 1996, and aligns with global guidelines for integral and humanized education to promote a fairer and healthier society.

Lula da Fonte noted that traditional methods of raising awareness, such as distributing leaflets, no longer work in a digital society. She added that research indicates that empathy and respect for animals bring these same values between human beings and the environment.
