Medicine prices will be adjusted by up to 4.5% by manufacturers starting next Sunday (31). The percentage was defined by the council of the Regulation Chamber of Medicines Market and published last Thursday (28) in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union). O consumer should feel the impact in their pocket within two weeks.

The adjustment had already been anticipated by the blog Conta em Dia, from R7, as Sindusfarma (Pharmaceutical Products Industry Union) estimated the replacement of accumulated official inflation. The calculation is based on the IPCA (Broad National Consumer Price Index) for the period from March 2023 to February 2024.

The increase, however, depends on a formula prepared by the body linked to Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency). The pharmaceutical sector is subject to price controls.

Only once a year are pharmaceutical companies authorized to adjust the prices of their products, to compensate for increases in production costs accumulated over the previous 12 months. The adjustment should affect around 13 thousand products.

According to the resolution, the maximum allowable drug price adjustment will be as follows: level 1 (4.50%), level 2 (4.50%) and level 3 (4.50%). Companies will be able to make the adjustment within 15 days after the publication of the ordinance, which is signed by Daniela Marreco Cerqueira.
