Although environmental conditions are more easily controlled in intensive dairy production, such as compost barn and free stall systemsthere are important points to be observed so that the environment provides greater comfort and well-being for the cow.

In the compost barn system, aspects such as adequate sizing installation, the projection correct location of the warehouse, the bed management and the ventilation system These are just some of the points that deserve special attention during and after project implementation.

These aspects not only directly interfere with the well-being of the dairy cow, but also imply activity production costs. Poorly sized, incorrectly designed sheds and inefficient ventilation can seriously compromise dairy production.

What is the ideal area per lactating cow in the compost barn? How to alleviate the thermal stress of animals in this system? What will be the future of intensive systems in dairy farming? These and other questions are answered in class “Behavior and well-being of dairy cows in compost barn”.

The class is addressed by the Agricultural Engineer Flavio Damasceno. In early 2018, he served as a Visiting Researcher at the Farm Technology Group at Wageningen University (Netherlands), calibrating low-cost sensors for gas monitoring in Compost Barn installations. Post-doctorate in Bioclimatology for Animals and Plants from the National University of Colombia – Medellin headquarters (2017). PhD in Rural Constructions and Ambience from the Federal University of Viçosa and Master in Constructions and Ambience from UFLA. He is a Specialist in Environmental Management and Management in Agroindustry. He has worked extensively as a technical consultant and designer of installations for raising dairy cows of the Compost Barn type in Brazil, Argentina, the Netherlands and the USA. Carrying out scientific work in conjunction with the University of Kentucky (USA) and the National University of Colombia with an emphasis on mathematical modeling and computer simulation of animal facilities.
