The outbreak of respiratory diseases, including dengue, influenza and COVID-19, has led to a significant increase in demand for medical care in Aquidauana.

Juliana Miranda, technical nurse in charge of Hospital Regional Estácio Muniz, reported that the hospital unit has faced an increasing volume of patients.

“We are a hospital that serves the entire region. We do not deny care and, recently, we have seen a large increase in the number of outpatients. These are patients who seek first care with flu or dengue symptoms and need to undergo a medical evaluation, undergo tests and receive intravenous medication before being released. The most serious cases remain hospitalized”, explains Juliana.

To deal with the increase in patients, the hospital reinforced its staff. “There was an emergency increase in the number of professionals, including one more doctor per shift and the addition of two nursing technicians and one nurse”, adds Juliana.

In 2024, 215 cases of respiratory diseases were reported in the city, with 85 confirmations of COVID-19 and 40 of Influenza A, and two deaths were recorded.

Patricia Panachuki, Health Secretary of Aquidauana, highlighted the importance of vaccination.

“The vaccine does not completely prevent infection, but it significantly reduces the severity of symptoms, preventing hospitalizations and serious complications. Vaccination is essential”, says Panachuki. She also points out that vaccination coverage in the city is still low, which contributes to the circulation of the virus.

With the continued spread of respiratory viruses, SESAU recommends some preventive measures:

  • Intensify hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol gel.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth without washing your hands.
  • Use a tissue or your forearm to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Do not share personal objects, such as glasses and cutlery.
  • Keep environments well ventilated and avoid crowds.
  • Wear masks if you have flu-like symptoms.
  • Symptomatic children should rest, increase fluid intake and avoid close contact with other peers. They should not go to school to prevent transmission of the virus.
  • Keep your vaccination record up to date.
