Breeders and pet lovers organize a protest on Sunday (28), in front of Campo Grande Airport, to ask for more humanity with pets after the death of the golden retriever lost by airline

After the incident involving the golden retriever, Joca was lost by an airline and remained for more than 8 hours, in a compartment close to the hold of the plane and died, breeders and pet owners will hold a protest in front of Ueze Airport Elias Zahran, in Campo Grande.

The organization is being carried out by breeders of the golden retriever breed, together with dog-loving owners who were touched by what happened to Joca.

Joca, aged 5, left Guarulhos International Airport (SP), on Monday (22) and should have gone with his owner to the destination of Sinop (MT). However, the airline Gol lost the dog and ended up going to Fortaleza (CE).

In Sinop, the animal’s owner, João Fantazzini, found out about what happened and informed that Joca was being taken back to Guarulhos (SP), where he did not resist and ended up dying, which was confirmed by the company.

The owner embarked back to Guarulhos (SP) and upon arriving at the airport he found Joca dead inside the transport box in the company’s kennel. In a note, the company said that a team from GOLLOG Animals unloaded the dog in Fortaleza and sent images of Joca embarking again to the owner. The company regretted what happened.

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security notified the company requesting explanations about what happened with a period of two days to demonstrate the actions taken with Joca and prevention so that situations like this do not happen again.

Following the notification, the company announced this Wednesday (24) that the transportation of animals in the hold of aircraft from both the GOLLOG Animals and Dog&Cat services is suspended for 30 days while investigations continue.

Protest

Veterinarian Flávia Acorci explained to the State Post Office that the travel time may have been decisive in increasing Joca’s stress. The route scheduled for 2h30 ended up becoming 8h, in a race that requires a lot of hydration.

“The cause of death has not yet been reported, but, knowing that for a long time the doggy, the pet, the dog, you know, in this sector, all this happens. It can cause death due to stress, fear, due to the noise of turbines and mainly due to the heat, which causes heatstroke, which is hyperthermia”, explained the veterinarian.

For the creator of the golden retriever breed, Elyas Oliveira and one of the organizers of the protest, he highlighted the fact that a dog of this breed drinks on average two liters of water every time it needs to hydrate. Among the characteristics of the Golden is docility and attachment to its owners.

“The Golden is a dog that really likes company. He doesn’t like to be alone. So much so that most owners who have more than one Golden are just so they don’t have to be alone. It’s difficult to have someone who only has one, you know, they can have one at first takes another. To avoid being alone and sad. We always recommend a dog for company. They are extremely docile, they love children, they love children and they are very, very attached to their owners”, pointed out Elyas.

“So spending so much time in a stressful environment, in a noisy environment with sometimes low temperatures, can cause problems. So for a dog with Golden’s personality, the stress is very high. There are other dogs that can also suffer a lot of stress, but then I I can’t say that I don’t know much more about Golden. It’s really a lot of stress for the dog. He doesn’t understand, he doesn’t know what’s going on.”

The breeder understands that some rules are necessary, however, companies need to take into account that the dog is not cargo and should not be taken as cargo. One of Elyas’ requests is that the dog stays closer to the owner for longer, if there is a connection that allows him to have access to the pet.

“Imagine us in a cubicle traveling for 6, 7, 8 hours, depending on the location, if there is a connection, right? So, we expect more humanity from them. There are rules that we know are not from the company, they are from ANAC, but [temos que] review all of this, [para] serve as a warning. It’s not the first case, it won’t be the last case, this happens, but review, listen to NGOs, veterinarians, everyone, to improve these rules”.

While following the development of what happened, veterinarian Gabrielle Denadai and her wife, Stéfany Ortega, are moving from Campo Grande to Piauí, and will have to share the trip as they have six pets (3 cats and three dogs). It will be more than 7 hours of travel.

“Unfortunately, my dogs don’t have the weight and size to go in the cabin, they only have to go in the hold, and even if they could, as each passenger can only take one animal in the cabin, I choose to take the cats with me. I’m a veterinarian I also understand that for the cat there is much more risk due to stress”, explained the veterinarian.

“But even for dogs, it’s a very stressful process and one that could easily be minimized to almost nothing if they could go in the cabin with their owners.”

According to Gabrielle, the company provided a bowl of water inside the transport box, which he can eat two hours before the flight and she can also give the pets water during connections. The company also informed that it provides a qualified professional to check the situation of the puppies.

However, one of the problems presented is that confirmation of their boarding is only issued by the company 48 hours in advance. “If it were nearby, we would definitely go by car just to get everyone there together and safely, but as it’s a very far away state, we have to take into account the issue of the plane”, explained Gabrielle.

GOAL

  • Dogs and cats weighing up to 10kg are not allowed in the cabin;
  • The pet must be at least 6 months old;
  • The owner must present a document certified by the veterinarian with the following information: breed, name, age, origin and pedigree.
  • The transport box must have the following measurements: The transport box must be up to 82 cm high, 114 cm wide and 142 cm long;
  • Cost: domestic flights cost between R$250 and R$300; while international prices vary between R$600 and R$650;
  • Check-in must be done by the pet’s owner at the service desk two hours before the flight for domestic flights and three hours for international flights;
  • Gol offers the following services:
  • Dog&Cat, for pets weighing more than 30kg, the company provides a transport box. The animals travel in the cargo compartment and the cost of the service is R$850 and R$900 (for domestic flights) and R$1,110 and R$1,150 (international)
  • The Gollog service, for animals over 30kg, must be done 48 hours in advance;
  • Documentation varies according to each species and can be consulted on Gollog’s official website.

LATAM

  • The company offers three travel options for animals: in the cabin (with the owner); in the luggage compartment of the same flight; and via Latam Cargo, where the pet travels on another aircraft;
  • The guardian must present a document issued by the veterinarian, containing information about the animal such as age, breed, proof of vaccinations and declaration of good health;
  • To be able to travel, the pet must be 16 weeks old and have been weaned five days before the trip;
  • International flights must respect the criteria required in the destination country;
  • It is permitted for each passenger to take a small animal in the cabin;
  • The animal cannot be sedated and the dimensions of the transport box must be: 25 cm high, 28 cm wide and 40 cm long (it is essential that it can stand up and move around in the space);
  • The only classes that allow animals in the cabin are: Economy or Premium Economy;
  • Even so, pet boarding will only be allowed if the flight has empty seats;
  • Cost: R$ 200 reais (domestic flights) and up to US$ 250 approximately R$ 1,282.50 (international flights)
  • For larger animals, customers are advised to consult the pet service in the luggage compartment (animals are not allowed on flights lasting 7 hours). In this modality, each passenger can board with two pets weighing up to 45kg;
  • The carrier box must contain a container for water and food;
  • Cost: R$500 and R$900 (domestic flights) and US$300 approximately R$1,539 (international flights).

BLUE

  • The airline is allowed to transport dogs and cats in the cabin, as long as they are in a transport box with the following measurements: centimeters high, 32 centimeters wide and 43 centimeters deep;
  • The pet in the carrier cannot weigh more than 10kg;
  • If the limit is exceeded, the animal may be taken in the cargo compartment or in a specific place for pets;
  • It is necessary to present documents signed by a veterinarian, issued no more than 10 days before the flight, certifying the pet’s health, with the vaccination card (the anti-rabies vaccination card being updated for animals over three months old);
  • The rabies vaccine must have been administered at least 30 days before the flight or less than 1 year before the date of travel;
  • It will be necessary to present an International Zoosanitary Certificate (CZI) and an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI), which are documents valid for 60 days starting from the date of issue;
  • Cost: domestic flights R$250 with permission for up to three animals per aircraft in the cabin; International flight fees can vary between R$250 and R$1,575;

** For guide or companion dogs, the rules will not apply as they have received training to travel by plane and have permission to go with the owner according to the survey carried out by FolhaPress.
