On March 26, the French embassy in Brasília promoted a seminar that discussed public health in Brazil and the European country. ABRAIDI was represented by the technical director, Sérgio Madeira, welcomed by members of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Dulce Nunes Osinski and Jean-Patrick Lajonchere. The event was also attended by representatives from Fapesp, Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz, Instituto Butantan, the companies Sanofi and Servier, among other organizations.

The theme “French and Brazilian Expertise in Public Health” was addressed by speakers from both nations who presented views on science, education and cooperation and especially in preparation for health emergencies, such as the recent experience with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The former director of the WHO and several other science and health institutions, columnist and writer, Didier Houssim, who is also part of the French National Academy of Medicine, exposed the need for global actions (WHO, International Health Regulations, centralization of data for decision, among others), in addition to national initiatives monitoring the flow of people, animals, goods, carrying out systematic tests and collecting data and, finally, local actions focused on serving people and necessary infrastructure (materials, equipment, oxygen, human resources) to face future health crises.

The head of the Molecular Medicine Laboratory at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP, Carolina Lázari, spoke about Brazilian preparation during Covid-19, supported by constitutional precepts, the brilliant response of the SUS to the serious demands of the pandemic and recalled that Brazil was the fourth country in number of deaths, even though it was not fourth in population.

“Both authorities emphasized the need for these events to be treated in accordance with science, repudiating the conduct of measures under ideological influences or particular beliefs. They also emphasized the importance of human values in creating and leading health teams”, highlighted Sérgio Madeira, who concluded: “it was a short, condensed event, but of great meaning and content. Proud of our science, our SUS and the professionals who work in it”.
