In Mato Grosso do Sul, the number of divorces granted in 2022 soared, with a total of 7,678, marking an increase of 42.6% compared to the previous year, according to the Civil Registry Statistics survey. This significant variation also reflects the general divorce rate, with the state recording one of the highest rates in Brazil, second only to the Federal District. The data was released this Wednesday (27) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The numbers show that, on average, men in the State divorce at 42.9 years old and women at 39.9, maintaining the age difference observed in the previous year. In the State, the average time between marriage and divorce decreased to 11.6 years, one of the smallest intervals in the country, indicating a reduction in the longevity of marriages in relation to the national average of 16 years.

The largest share of divorces (44.8%) occurred in families with minor children, followed by families without children (34.2%). These data highlight the family dynamics prevalent in marital dissolutions in the state.

Meanwhile, weddings have shown signs of recovery following the significant impact of the coronavirus pandemic. In 2022, there was a 6.1% increase in marriages compared to 2021, with 15,038 marriages registered. This increase is part of an upward trend over the last decade, including a slight predominance of same-sex marriages, particularly among women.

Despite a notable drop in marriages between 2019 and 2020, due to health restrictions, numbers rose again with the introduction of vaccination campaigns and the relaxation of Covid-19 containment measures. December remained the month with the most registered marriages, maintaining an annual tradition.
