Helv completes four years and is consolidating its presence in providing medium and high complexity surgeries

The Leonardo Da Vinci State Hospital (Helv), a unit of the Ceará Health Department (Sesa), completes this Saturday (23) four years of care and attention to the health of the population of Ceará. The hospital was a private unit and was requested in 2020 by the State of Ceará to respond to the emergency situation of the Covid-19 pandemic. Over the years, it has become a reference in medium and high complexity surgery, with more than 24,500 surgeries performed until February 2024.

For the general director of Helv, Emídio Teixeira, the first major challenge was fighting Covid-19. “And over these other years, another challenge was identifying what the role of the hospital really was within the state’s health network, what our profile was, what could be better to serve society in health care. At the beginning, we had the challenge of the joint effort, contributing to the reduction of elective surgical queues, which had been suppressed during the pandemic period, and we realized that we have this capacity to respond better in terms of care within a surgical profile”, he recalls. Teixeira.

Helv serves surgical patients in the areas of general surgery, urology, otorhinolaryngology (adult and pediatric), orthopedics and head and neck. In addition, it has 59 ICU beds, 94 medical clinic beds and 82 surgical clinic beds. Until February 2024, it recorded 26,167 hospitalizations and carried out 1,549,213 laboratory tests, 85,460 imaging tests and more than 70 thousand hospitalizations. “We are the backstop for the state’s hospitals, always finding the best way to offer the best care, the best attention to our patients every day”, highlights the general director.

The numbers are translated into care for each patient and each employee. Antônio Wuandson Costa, 17, saw his dream of participating in school games cut short in 2021, when he tore his knee ligament while playing futsal with friends. From then on, he reports, the knee kept giving out. On March 13 of this year, he underwent Helv surgery.

“I had already lost hope, then the appointment came and until the surgery I didn’t wait even two months. Now I’m going to do everything I’ve ever wanted, I’m going to enjoy the things I’ve always wanted. I want to go back to the gym and then practice some type of fight”, he plans.

For the nurse at the medical clinic, Alice Fernandes de Almeida, who has been part of the Helv team of professionals for three years, the hospital is also synonymous with care for workers.

“I was admitted amid the chaos of a pandemic, uncertainty and a new reality in front of me. And in the midst of this chaos I discovered that I was expecting my first daughter. The institution welcomed me and gave me all the support so that everything happened peacefully. I have always counted on the support of people who work side by side with a lot of strength, hope and exchange of knowledge, which has made me grow as a professional and person. Every obstacle encountered here, at the beginning, I now see as steps that bring me closer to where I want to get: a responsible and committed professional. I thank the institution for its support and for being the home where I can exercise care”, says Alice.

The general director of Helv, Emídio Teixeira, projects that, in the coming years, the objective is to be better and better. “We always want to improve to respond to the needs of the population, whether in the form of safe surgery, shorter hospital stays, better rehabilitation, better practice. That the patient can receive the best quality specific care, giving back to society in a safe way”, he highlights.

Celebrations

Helv’s birthday celebration was held on March 21st and 22nd, with the Journey of Knowledge. An exhibition on the work of the various care, administrative and support sectors, which organize and give life to the hospital, was set up in the unit’s Piano Square. The opening was attended by the Helv Choir, made up of workers from the unit and paid tribute by the Ombudsman to the most praised employees of 2023. On March 22nd, the traditional congratulations took place.
