American comedian Arj Barker expelled a mother and her baby from a performance he was giving in Melbourne, Australia. The incident happened last Saturday, 20th, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

Trish Faranda, the woman who was removed from the show, was accompanied by her 7-month-old baby. According to the vehicle, her mother stated that the child was making a noise equivalent to a slight cough during the performance and said she felt humiliated when the comedian asked her to leave the place.

The newspaper interviewed a member of the audience, who said that the child was crying and that the show was interrupted several times due to the noise. Barker reportedly “politely” asked the woman, who was sitting in the front row, to leave.

On the 3AW website, the woman said that the baby, after the small cough, “whined”, but that it had not been “very high”. She was breastfeeding at the time the comedian requested her withdrawal and said the interaction was “intimacy.”

In a statement sent to ABC radio, Arj Barker stated: “The show is strictly for over 15s, as clearly stated on the ticket website. She had a baby with her, the baby was hindering my performance. On behalf of the other 700 people who paid to see the show, I politely told her the baby couldn’t stay.”

“She thought I was joking, which made the conversation a little awkward. I felt bad about the whole situation and stated this that night more than once. I offered her a refund. Firstly, the theater staff should not have sat a baby in my audience,” she added.

Barker also said that his request for her to leave was unrelated to her breastfeeding the child and that he had not noticed this due to the lights that were shining in his face at the time. “For the record, I support public breastfeeding as it is perfectly natural,” he declared.

On the website responsible for selling tickets, Ticketmaster, the rating was 15 years old, as well as that everyone in the audience should have tickets, regardless of age.

On the internet, local society debated what happened. One of them was Melbourne State MP Ellen Sandell. On X (Twitter), she wrote: “I’m furious to hear this. It’s hard enough for new mothers to participate in society with all the barriers placed in front of them – to be humiliated like this, for just trying to enjoy the comedy festival, is horrible Arj Barker should take a good look at himself and apologize.”
