The Russian Defense Ministry announced this Monday (6) that it will include the use of tactical nuclear weapons in military exercises that will be held soon, by order of the country’s president, Vladimir Putin.
In a statement, the ministry said that the act is a response to “provocative speeches and threats from certain Western authorities against the Russian Federation.”
The statement does not name Western authorities, but Russia has stated on several occasions that French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements about possible intervention in Ukraine are extremely dangerous.
The exercises will include training to prepare for the use of non-strategic nuclear weapons, according to Defense. Divisions of the Southern Military District and naval detachments will be mobilized.
The tactical nuclear arsenal has a lower destructive power compared to nuclear warheads equipped with intercontinental ballistic missiles, designed to destroy entire cities.
Russia claims that the US and its allies in Europe are bringing the world to the brink of a confrontation between nuclear powers by supporting Ukraine with tens of millions of dollars worth of weapons in the confrontation against Moscow’s forces since the Russian invasion of the country. started in February 2022.
Countries that have active nuclear weapons in their arsenal usually carry out routine checks, but rarely point to these exercises as responses to specific threats.
