“My mother-in-law is a politician. She has a lot of experience in the Swedish parliament. Whenever the issue comes up, she just says, ‘Don’t do it. You have to give in on everything. It’s all about negotiation. And nowadays the harassment that happens is unthinkable.”

With more than 40 years of acting career, Hugh Grant has accumulated a variety of works, from the classic ‘Sense and Sensibility’ (1995), through the iconic ‘Simply Love’ (2002) to his most recent appearance as Oompa Loompa in ‘ Wonka’ (2023).

Routine definitely doesn’t seem to be a problem for the experienced 63-year-old star, but that hasn’t stopped him from considering new professional adventures. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Grant addressed his new series, ‘The Regime’, starring Kate Winslet, and revealed his dormant aspirations. “It crossed my mind,” he admitted when asked if he would consider entering politics.

However, Grant’s pessimism outweighs any desire to venture into this field. “What I really see up close is that it’s almost impossible to do anything. It’s just impossible. You have to drag so many people with you,” he added.

“My mother-in-law is a politician. She has a lot of experience in the Swedish parliament. Whenever the issue comes up, she just says, ‘Don’t do it. You have to give in on everything. It’s all about negotiation. And nowadays the harassment that happens is unthinkable.” Grant refers to Susanne Eberstein, the mother of his wife Anna Elisabet, who served in the Swedish parliament between 1994 and 2018. She is the mother of Grant’s three children, born in 2012, 2015 and 2018.

Hugh Grant explained that he already had a small foray into politics in 2019, when he campaigned against Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but admitted that he was unsuccessful. “We lost in every district.” “And it was absolutely terrifying,” he summarized, before concluding: “So, I see that you have to be very brave or crazy to enter politics in the digital age.”
