When Anitta began her performance at the Latin American Music Awards this Thursday in Las Vegas, in the United States, she was accompanied by dancers with an unusual costume: face and head covered by colorful shirts, without a shirt and with wind instruments in their hands. The choice, however, was not random: it referred to a photo that became famous eight years ago, in October 2016, when a group of musicians from Morro do Turano, “armed” with their instruments, were taken on one of the community’s stairs. .

At that time, Matheus Silva, Marcio Santana, Gilson Reis and the brothers Israel and Misael Silva were featured in the record, taken by photographer Anderson Valentim. The photo was part of the Favelaografia project, created by the advertising agency NBS. In partnership with a cell phone brand, Favelaografia distributed devices to nine photographers living in nine communities spread across the city. It was up to Anderson, Borel’s representative, to create the image that went viral.

— I took the photo just one week after that war in Turano. My intention is to go against the grain of what reaches the newspapers. Using an image reference that runs in the media, change this unique impression of war and violence stuck in communities. It seems that we have lost our humanity, our sensitivity — said Anderson at the time; he is also a musician and friends with the five characters in his photo.
