According to Efron, it all started with an accident in his own home. The artist had his socks on when he decided to run around the house. But the idea didn’t pan out, as he slipped and hit his chin against a granite corner of a fountain. He recalled that he had lost consciousness, and when he woke up, his chin bone was hanging from his face. It was his jaw that had been torn apart.

Asked about the swelling in his face, Zac explained what led to that reaction. The “High School Musical” actor mentioned that the masseter muscle, used for chewing, works together with the other facial muscles “like a symphony.” However, when he was injured and ended up injuring that region, the muscles in his jaw and face had to “compensate” for the loss. Efron even went to physical therapy and worked with a specialist to deal with it, but at the time of the viral video, he was in Australia and had been out of treatment for a while.
“The masseters just grew up”recalled the actor. “They just got really, really big”, continued. Zac had no idea of the buzz his appearance caused, until his mom called to see if he’d had any plastic surgery. During the interview, journalist Lauren Larson noticed that Efron’s jaw and face currently “look a lot like they always have.” But, in fact, already in July of last year, the artist resurfaced with the usual facial expression, without the swelling effects – a fact that left many fans relieved.
