The first real images of Embraer’s ‘flying car’

-

Eve Air Mobility released, this Wednesday (08), the first official images of the full-scale “flying car” prototype, manufactured in Taubaté (SP). Eve is Embraer’s urban mobility company (read: “flying cars”).

Embraer’s ‘flying car’ advances towards the real world

  • Eve Air Mobility, linked to Embraer, released the first images of its “flying car” prototype, the eVTOL produced in Taubaté, in the interior of São Paulo. The images highlight the vehicle in black with green details, but do not reveal technical details;
  • According to a statement from CEO Johann Bordais, the company is making significant progress in assembling the first eVTOL prototype, with expectations to complete production and begin flight testing soon;
  • Eve Air Mobility has already received nearly three thousand orders for the eVTOL from different sectors, including helicopter operators, airlines, leasing companies and shared flight platforms;
  • The company plans for “flying cars” to enter commercial operation by the end of 2026, marking a significant advance in urban air mobility.

The images do not reveal many details of the eVTOL (acronym in English for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Vehicle). They only show a model in black, with green details.

Assembly of Embraer’s 1st ‘flying car’ prototype progresses

A statement published on the Eve Air Mobility website contains the following statement from the CEO, Johann Bordais: “We are making significant progress in assembling our first eVTOL prototype, with plans to finalize production and begin flights.”

In total, almost three thousand models were ordered by helicopter operators, airlines, leasing companies (which offer leasing contracts to people and other companies) and shared flight platforms.

Eve Air Mobility estimates that its “flying cars” will enter into operation by the end of 2026.

Embraer’s “flying car” is a “lift+cruise” model. This means that the aircraft has rotors for vertical displacement and wings for horizontal displacement. Manufactured in Taubaté (SP), the first EVE-100 are scheduled to be delivered in 2026. To date, 2,850 models have been ordered, according to the Advanced Air Mobility Reality Index, from SMG Consulting.

The EVE-100 has eight propellers for takeoff and landing and an electric motor for propulsion. The eVTOL’s autonomy is 100 kilometers – therefore, it can be used for urban air taxis. In a simulation available on the Eve Air Mobility, a route in Miami (USA) that would take 45 minutes by car would take 15 minutes on the EVE-100. And the trip would not emit CO2.

The “flying car” will be able to transport up to four people in addition to the pilot – or five people, if the autopilot (not yet certified) is activated. The routes will be drawn based on pre-defined routes. And landings and takeoffs will take place at airports and ventiports (helipads for electric aircraft).

The first flight tests, scheduled to begin in 2024, will take place in three Brazilian cities and one American city. They are: São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Porto Alegre (RS) – when possible – and São Francisco.
