Minister cites the gasoline exemption in the previous administration as one of the “mistakes” that the Lula government had to adjust

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Wednesday (May 8, 2024) that inflation in Brazil “is behaving well”, even though the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) had to “undo mistakes” from the administration of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The previous government, in the middle of the election, removed a tax on fossil fuels to artificially lower the price of gasoline”, he stated in a radio interview on the program “Good morning, minister”, broadcast by ChannelGov. “No country in the world stops charging taxes on fossil fuels. You, in general, encourage wind, solar energy, green hydrogen, biofuel”he stated.

The minister said that “Denial Brazil, from the previous time, was the only country in the world that exempted fossil fuels”. Haddad also said that this type of measure goes “against” what the country needs to “generate a better environment”. “If we want to avoid climate disaster, we have to decarbonize the Planet”, he stated.

Haddad said that the current government faced a period of “very complex” from Lula’s election, in October 2022, to his inauguration, in January of the following year.

The transition at the Ministry of Finance, for example, I can assure you that it was the worst possible. After the election [de Lula]we had 1,000 setbacks”, he said, adding that “it was very difficult” the life of those who worked alongside the current government during this period.

At the end of the interview, the minister also stated that Brazil is, gradually, “converging on a diagnosis of what needs to be done”. He stated: “And it’s not easy to go from extreme divergence to convergence.”.
