Recently, apple cider vinegar became a topic on social media as it was promoted as a treatment for hair and skin. Despite being considered an important ingredient in the food routine for some time, can the product really bring aesthetic benefits?

According to dermatologist Eliana Chagas, specialist at the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), apple cider vinegar has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. “It’s a product that comes from apple fermentation, in a process in which bacteria and yeast transform the fruit juice into ethanol and then the ethanol into acetic acid”, she explains.

What are the benefits of apple cider vinegar?

“In food, consumption of the product can increase insulin sensitivity, causing blood sugar levels to decrease, help prevent cardiovascular problems and neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidation processes, leading to a health gain”, he says the doctor.

But this does not necessarily mean that the properties of vinegar will have the same effect on beauty. There is the idea that it can help treat acne, improve pores and minimize blemishes. But there are not enough scientific studies to prove the result. In fact, using the substance on the face can end up worsening acne, causing irritation and even burns, warns the doctor.

As for hair, applying apple cider vinegar is less risky — as long as it is diluted in water, as Eliana Chagas points out. “Apple cider vinegar has an acidic pH very similar to that of the hair shaft, so it can help close the cuticles, improving the porosity and appearance of the hair. In some cases, it can also help control oiliness and the fight against dandruff. But it is important that it is diluted — the measure is five spoons of vinegar for a glass of water, use after shampoo and conditioner, for about 20 minutes, before rinsing”, he highlights.

The dermatologist warns: “If used too frequently, vinegar can lead to dehydration and cause damage to the scalp, as it contains multiple acids. Ingesting it in excess can also cause gastrointestinal disorders and abdominal pain.” When in doubt, maintain controlled use and seek professional guidance to receive specific recommendations for your health.
