In one of the four criminal cases in which Donald Trump is a defendant, he is accused of having taken to his home, in Florida, confidential documents that should have remained at the White House after his departure from the presidency of the United States in 2021.

The judge in this case decided, this Tuesday (7), to postpone the beginning of a phase of the process. The case against Trump in this case was supposed to begin on May 20, but Cannon said that would not be possible due to the high number of motions filed before the court. The judge did not provide any date for the start of the trial.

As a result, the case is unlikely to be judged before this year’s US elections, scheduled for November 5th.

According to “The New York Times”, in theory, this is the most difficult case for Donald Trump, as there is a lot of evidence.

The postponement was taken for granted – even the case’s prosecutor, Jack Smith, recognized that it would be necessary to postpone.

Judge appointed by Trump himself

The judge in this case, Aileen Cannon, was appointed by Trump himself in 2020. She stated that the hearings prior to the case will take place until July 22nd.

Trump claims he is innocent. The formal accusation is that he retained important national security documents in his mansion in Mar-a-Lago, Florida and, in addition, obstructed the federal government’s attempts to recover these documents.

The judge still needs to make a series of decisions for the case to go to trial.

Trump’s lawyers have already made two statements about when this case should be heard: at one point, they said it should be after the election, but when the judge asked them to propose a timeline, they suggested August 12. Smith, the prosecutor, said it should begin in July.

The tactic of Trump’s lawyers in all cases in which he is a defendant has been to try to delay the proceedings and bet on his election in this year’s vote — in the presidency, it will be more difficult to prosecute him.
