A driver died after crashing his car into an outside gate of the White House in Washington on Saturday night (4), the United States Secret Service said.

“Shortly before 10:30 p.m., a vehicle traveling at high speed collided with an external perimeter gate of the White House complex,” the service said in a statement on the X network, adding that “there is no threat” to the White House itself.

Officers who arrived at the scene “attempted to provide assistance to the driver who was found dead,” the statement said.

The Secret Service, along with District of Columbia police and firefighters, has launched an investigation into the fatal crash, said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, which is responsible for White House security.

Guglielmi added that there was “no threat or implications for public safety.” In January, authorities arrested another person who also crashed a vehicle into the complex’s outer gate.

The White House has seen a series of high-profile break-in incidents in recent years, prompting the construction in 2020 of a taller, sturdier metal fence around the perimeter of the iconic mansion.
