“We confirm that three individuals were found dead in Santo Tomás, Baja California,” explained the US Federal Police (FBI) office in the city of San Diego, without detailing the identities of the victims.
Three Mexicans are being investigated for their disappearance, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said.
From Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said that the disappearance of his citizens, originally from Perth, “is a truly worrying situation” and that the Australian embassy in Mexico is working with local authorities to clarify the incident.
“We hope these brothers are found safe and sound, but there is real concern about the fact that they are missing. Obviously their mother is very worried. We are just hoping for a positive outcome,” Albanese added to Sydney’s Channel 7 on Friday.
Baja California, sought after by foreign tourists for its beaches and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of cities like Tijuana, is also one of the most violent regions in the country due to organized crime.
In November 2015, two other Australian surfers, Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, were murdered and then burned while traveling in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa.
