The mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, announced this Friday, 3, that he will use containers to temporarily accommodate detainees. According to the politician, the initiative aims to create more space until prisoners are transferred to the penitentiary system.

A total of 19 containers will be installed in three police stations in fenced areas — which should provide 300 new spaces. Alongside the Minister of Security, Patricia BullrichMacri attributed the overcrowding of criminals to the previous government.

He also highlighted a significant increase in the number of prisoners in the city, which went from 60 to more than 2000 between 2020 and 2024.

In addition to installing new spaces, the city hall wants to make house arrest possible through 2,000 electronic ankle bracelets for low-danger inmates. The deportation of detained illegal aliens, which aims to free up space in overcrowded facilities, is also in authorities’ plans. “It makes no sense for Argentina to spend resources on someone who comes to commit crimes,” said Macri.

Mayor of Buenos Aires seeks to reduce prison overcrowding

The mayor emphasized the need for quick action, considering that around 80 arrests occur daily in the capital. The proposed measures are expected to be implemented within the next 90 days. This should result in the release of at least 600 vacancies in the city’s police stations and detention centers.

The announcement of the measures comes after a series of prison escapes in April, with 19 escapees since the beginning of the year and a total of 41 in 2023. The initiative seeks to deal with the overload in the city’s prison system, which is facing a critical situation of over crowded.
