Spanish-Brazilian Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo was arrested this Wednesday (1st), accused of murdering teenager Daniel Anjorin, aged 14, in London. Scotland Yard, headquarters of the Metropolitan Police in the English capital, registered the case on Tuesday (30), reporting that the crime was committed by an attack with a sword.
According to the police, four other people were injured, including two officers. The attack also saw Marcus, 36, charged with attempted murder and battery. The suspect in the teenager’s death is expected to appear in court this Thursday (2).
“We are starting to get an idea of what happened on Tuesday, but the investigation is complex given the number of crime scenes, forensic evidence, hours of surveillance camera recordings and witnesses we have to speak to.”explained Chief Inspector Larry Smith, responsible for the investigation, in a statement.
What happened?
On Tuesday, police received a call “just before 7am” local time after several witnesses saw a van crash into a fence near a tube station in the London region of Hainault. “A 33-year-old man was run over [pela van] and then attacked by the suspect, and suffered neck injuries.”Smith detailed.
A 35-year-old man later suffered “lacerations to his arm” when he was attacked, before the suspect attacked Anjorin. The young man died from his injuries shortly after being taken to hospital. Officers arrived at the scene of the attack 12 minutes after the first emergency call. They attempted to neutralize the suspect with incapacitating spray and an electric pistol, but were unsuccessful.
The Spanish-Brazilian seriously injured two police officers and “fled again, before finding himself surrounded by other officers”. Marcus Aurelio was finally arrested, 22 minutes after the first call. As preliminary evidence points out, police were not aware that the man was involved in previous incidents and have ruled out a terrorist motive for now.
Wave of violence
The attack took place in a context of an increase in violent actions with sharp weapons in the United Kingdom, and two days before local elections in the British capital. There, the conservative opposition harshly criticizes Labor mayor Sadiq Khan’s security policy.
