Cuba decided to suspend the flights of the state airline Cubana de Aviación to Argentina due to the refusal to supply fuel by the Argentine oil company YPF (Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales), in accordance with the embargo imposed by the United States on the island, the Ministry of Relations reported. Exteriors.

“Cubana de Aviación was forced to suspend regular flights between Cuba and Argentina”, said the Ministry on Tuesday (30) evening in a statement, considering the position of the company and the Argentine authorities to be contradictory, in a government that “preaches freedom at all costs.”

The ministry said that YPF communicated in March to the Cuban airline “its refusal to continue supplying fuel to its aircraft, in application of the United States blockade against Cuba” and that this has not changed.

The oil company “flagrantly violates” its national law, which considers foreign laws with “extraterritorial effects” to be “absolutely inapplicable”, denounced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Last week, the Cuban company reported the cancellation of two flights due to the impossibility of obtaining gasoline, which is restricted in the South American country, affecting several passengers who were stranded in Havana.

The Cuban airline “sought numerous alternatives to maintain operations planned and authorized by the Argentine air authority” and also tried not to affect passengers by turning to other airlines, the note added.

Even a Cuban official met in Buenos Aires with senior Argentine civil aviation executives, without receiving a satisfactory response that would guarantee the acquisition of fuel.

“It is contradictory to preach freedom at all costs, while limiting the freedom of a company that strictly complies with the regulatory provisions of Argentina and the International Civil Aviation Organization,” the statement added, referring to the ultra-liberal government of Javier Milei.

The sanctions applied by Washington against Cuba for more than six decades include companies anywhere in the world that do business with Havana. However, it is unusual for oil companies to deny fuel to Cubana de Aviación flights, which also have routes to Madrid and Caracas.

The suspension of flights comes almost a year after the Cuban airline resumed its trips to Argentina.

These sanctions were reinforced during the presidency of Republican Donald Trump (2017-2021), without his Democratic successor Joe Biden having significantly relaxed them, contributing to deepening Cuba’s worst economic crisis in three decades.
