“We will examine carefully,” said the chancellor in conversation with the UOL. “It’s an invitation to the head of state,” she explained.
Vieira recognizes that, being a Swiss initiative, the list of guests depends on the hosts. “Switzerland has great diplomatic coordination and this week they were in Saudi Arabia to discuss this issue,” he said. “They are canvassing several countries. What they want is to have a discussion that opens the way for something new,” he said.
Brazil defends the presence of Russians
The Brazilian government has been stating over the months that a negotiation process can only make sense if it involves the Russians. Even in conversation with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, Lula warned that there is no “unilateral” peace agreement. More recently, in an interview with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, the Ukrainian criticized the Brazilian’s possible trip to the BRICS summit, in October in Russia and organized by Vladimir Putin.
This is not the first attempt by the international community to find a negotiating path to the crisis that has already lasted more than 2 years. In the process that began in Denmark last year, the Ukrainians’ insistence on advancing their peace project prevented progress. The absence of the Russians didn’t help either.
“It was not a dialogue, it was a monologue and there was only one side. These conversations need to be examined in another context, with other countries from other regions, with important countries that can make a positive contribution to resolving this issue,” said Vieira .
