Four police officers died and four were injured in a shootout on Monday (29), during an operation to arrest a man in South Carolina, a state in the southeast of the United States, local authorities reported.

The suspect was found dead in the house where the arrest would take place, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg city police reported on the social network X.

Agents attended a house to arrest the suspect, who opened fire on the group. Police responded and a confrontation began, which lasted almost three hours, the security force said.

On Monday, the Justice Department announced the deaths of a sheriff’s deputy and two special unit agents. A few hours later, however, local police reported that one of the injured “passed away during the night.”

President Joe Biden expressed “condolences and support for the community,” the White House announced. Officers were met with gunfire as they attempted to locate a man suspected of possessing firearms, said Johnny Jennings, the local police chief.

Officers responded and killed the suspect, Jennings added, before calling the day “absolutely tragic for the city of Charlotte and the work of law enforcement.” A 17-year-old man and a woman were detained.
