The dust clouds appeared in North Africa, in the Sahara desert region, and were transported by the Mediterranean Sea to Greece. The scenery of the city of Athens, the country’s capital, was changed by the phenomenon.

Videos circulating on social media show the sky with an orange color and dense clouds on the horizon. The forecast is that changes in air currents will return the sky to normal in the region this Wednesday (24).

Tuesday saw high temperatures in Athens, with thermometers above 30ºC, a difference of more than 20ºC than what was recorded in the north of the country.

The heat added to the strong wind intensified the environmental fires that are recorded in Greece, with at least 25 outbreaks recorded by firefighters. Three people were arrested on suspicion of accidentally starting a fire. There were no deaths or significant damage.
