The governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue, from the conservative PAN (opposition), declared on Monday via X network that the attack against Gaytán “will not go unpunished” and that he will coordinate efforts to protect the candidates.

Guanajuato is considered the most violent state in Mexico, with more than 3,000 homicides in 2023, while Celaya is the epicenter of a war between the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel and Jalisco Nova Geração, considered one of the most powerful criminal groups in the country .

For several years now, the spiral of violence linked to organized crime has affected politicians from various parties, especially those who occupy or run for regional positions.

The reasons range from attempts by mafias to subject candidates to power struggles between political groups.

Last Saturday (30), the mayor of the municipality of Churumuco, in the state of Michoacán (west), Guillermo Torres, was murdered.

Since December 2006, when the federal government launched a controversial military offensive against drugs, more than 420,000 people have been murdered in Mexico, the majority of them victims of criminal acts, according to official data.
